Petra Airlines was founded in 2005 by a group of businessmen and industry insiders and commenced  flight operations early second quarter of 2011. It is part of  Jordan based Rum Group (which includes Rum Trans, Rum Hotels, Rum Tours, and Petra Airlines).

On Nov 25th 2010,  Petra Airlines received an Air Operators Certificate(AOC #: C014) from Jordan Civil Aviation Authority to operate as a Jordanian commercial air operator effective as of 1st of Decemeber operating two A-320's.

Petra Airlines has started its operations with a direct flight from Markah Airport, Amman to Jeddah international Airport on Wednesday April 6th, 2011 traveling for "Umrah" (pilgrimage)  after  obtaining the required operating certificates from both CARC and GACA in Jordan and Saudi Arabia respectively.

Petra Airlines deployed one of its A320 aircrafts for the Jeddah route with two weekly flights on Sundays and Wednesdays in cooperation with Al-Jazeerah Travel.

Petra Airlines contracted PWC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) to develop a  business plan for a low-cost carrier utilizing  Jordan as a ub.  Petra Airlines has announced it will be offering stakes in the airline for potential strategic partners targeting European low-cost carriers  interested in having Jordan as hub in the region.
