CFM Joins Aviation Leaders in Signing Declaration on Climate Change

Geneva,  Switzerland, CFM International, along with other key aviation leaders, todayco-signed a declaration to broaden the industry’s commitment to action on climate change with a goal to advance and strengthen the interdependent pillars of sustainable development.

According to CFM International, its on-going investment in engine technologies will help support the industry’s commitment to meet the 2020 goal of carbon-neutral growth. While CFM is also working on longer-term technologies, including engine architectures like the open rotor, which could help address the ambitious target of a 50% reduction in carbon emission by 2050

“For each old aircraft replaced, our LEAP engine can eliminate as much as 11,000tons of CO2 emissions per year, depending on the age of the engines being replaced,” said Jean-Paul Ebanga, president and CEO of CFM International.  “We are proud of that achievement, but this isn’t about CFM.  This is a bottom-line result that is indicative of the sustained contribution that engine manufacturers have made over the past 40 years.”

Ebanga continued: “Today’s declaration, by bringing together thought leaders from across the industry,will support a global collaborative structure that can accelerate our collective ability to meet the environmental challenges of the future.

“We know that this kind of global partnership is critical, and we are happy to lend our full support and expertise to the ATAG initiatives.”

CFM56 and LEAP engines are products of CFM International, a 50/50 joint venture between Snecma (Safran group) and GE. CFM, tan international manufacturer of commercial aircraft engines, has delivered more than 23,000 engines to date and the fleet has achieved more than 575 million flight hours.
