NEW YORK, Singapore Airlines has selected the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine to power 30 Boeing 787-10Xs for delivery from the 2018/19 financial year.

This follows an agreement with Boeing on May 30, 2013 for the purchase of 30 787-10Xs, which are intended for use on medium-haul routes.

Twenty additional engines have been selected for the airline's subsidiary, Scoot will operate 10 Boeing 787-8 and 10 Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

The engine evaluation was from among two competing models available for the aircraft.

Singapore Airlines has also signed a letter of intent with Rolls-Royce for a TotalCare services package. Under the support agreement, Rolls-Royce will be responsible for the provision of maintenance, repair and overhaul services for the engines and spare engine support.

The announcement, which includes long-term service support, is worth $4bn at current list prices.

Eric Schulz, president - civil large engines, Rolls-Royce, said: "We are very proud that Singapore Airlines, one of the most respected carriers in the world, and its subsidiary Scoot have placed their trust in our Trent 1000 and our ability to deliver superior product and service performance. This decision is a tremendous reflection of the deep relationship that Rolls-Royce and Singapore Airlines enjoy, and allows us to continue to develop our strategic alignment."

Singapore Airlines and Scoot currently operate a total of 88 Rolls-Royce powered aircraft, with 88 more on order.

Jonathan Asherson, regional director, South East Asia, Rolls-Royce, added: "This decision for Trent 1000 engines underpins the strong partnerships we have developed with Singapore over many years. Singapore Airlines, and SIA Engineering Company, have been core components of our strategic relationships here that now include major services and manufacturing activity, technology acquisition and training. We are committed to further developing these successful partnerships."

The Trent 1000 powered Boeing 787 Dreamliner entered service in October 2011 and has completed more than 50,000 flying hours.

The order is conditional upon Boeing formally launching the 787-10X program.
