The airline was founded on March 19, 2008 by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the chairman of Emirates Airline. Although flydubai is not part of The Emirates Group, Emirates supported flydubai during the initial establishing phase.  On 14 July 2008 flydubai signed a firm order with for 50 Boeing 737-800s with a total value of 4 billion USD, with the option to change the order to the longer range Boeing 737-900ER, subject to flydubai requirement. Additionally, a leasing agreement was concluded with Babcock & Brown for four more 737-800s, planned to be delivered starting 2009. The first of these aircraft was delivered on 17 May 2009. Scheduled flights commenced on 1 June, with services to Beirut, Lebanon and Amman, Jordan. Since the referred aircraft delivery, the route network was significantly expanded.

CFM International Recognized flydubai as one of the Recipients of the 20,000th CFM56 Engine.

Dubai, In a ceremony at the Dubai Airshow today, CFM International recognized flydubai as one of the recipients of the 20,000th CFM56 engine. The aircraft with the 20,000th engine was delivered to the airline in October of this year.In 2008, flydubai placed an order for 50 CFM56-7B-powered Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft and will have six aircraft by year-end.
